Dementia is a general term used to describe a wide range of conditions and symptoms. Alzheimer’s disease afflicts between 60% to 80% of all individuals experiencing dementia. Most changes in the brain that cause dementia are permanent and progressive. However, some conditions that cause dementia symptoms can be reversed, including depression, side effects of medication, excessive alcohol use and vitamin deficiencies. There are other forms of dementia linked to types of dementia that affect a significant segment of the population. These patients may benefit in a memory care community.
