Sooner or Later: Finding the Right Time for Memory Care

Resident of Arden Courts and her husband

My wife’s Alzheimer’s confirmation came in May 2023.  As she progressed, I joined an Alzheimer’s support group and evaluated memory care facilities. Our adult daughters joined me for a second tour of Arden Courts and we decided that would be where she would go, but when? As she progressed at home, it became clear that she would be safer and enjoy a professional care environment.

While she was not party to the process until move in day, July 2024, she was surprised and disappointed. She was able to accept the reasoning and able to get acquainted with staff, schedules, activities, etc. She enjoys where she is. I sometimes wonder if we moved her too soon, but then I see other new residents where the family waited too long and the resident is unable to properly get acquainted with the staff, schedules, meals, activities, etc. Based on our experience and observations, we made the move at the right time. It is not an easy decision, but if you are looking at the timing, moving in a new resident sooner is better than later.
